Kia ora e te whānau,
Yesterday I took part in the Māori Language Moment 2021.
More than 1 million people joined in at midday yesterday to speak, sing, listen or play in Te Reo Māori. I joined in and said our school pepeha at 12 o'clock.
The other cool things that have happened in Te Wiki o Te Reo Māori is that heaps of New Zealand bands and artists have release their songs in Te Reo. This is one of my favourites:
I also like the new song from Six60 called Pepeha. I am going to try and create and learn my own Pepeha this week.
There are lots of cool things to get involved in. #reomaori #giveitago
Tino pai Tulsi. Hari Te Wiki o Te Reo Māori. Thanks for being brave and sharing your school pepeha. I look forward to reading/seeing your own one. I joined Wesley Primary at 12:00 yesterday and sang a waiata which taught me some new kupu. Do you know what piko and toro mean?
ReplyDeleteKia Ora Phil,
DeleteI did not know what they meant so I looked them up on the Maori dictionary and there were lots of different meanings. Can you please tell me what they mean?
Ma te wa,
Tulsi
Thanks for the reply Tulsi. I love the Māori dictionary site, but you're right sometimes a word has a lot of definitions. I had to use the clues from the actions in the song to work out that piko meant to bend down and toro meant to stand up straight. Here's another video of the same song. I think the images behind back up my thinking. video
DeleteHe rawe tō mahi, e hine! Thank you for sharing this - a very important week for our nation. So what do piko and toro mean? Or shall I go and find out for myself?
ReplyDeleteE noho ra.
